Current comments and reminiscences on Steven John Rothman:
Our colleague, friend of AIP, and long‑time editor of Journal of Applied Physics, Steven J. Rothman, passed away on Saturday, 31 May 2008. Steve will certainly be missed by his many friends at AIP.

In addition to Steve's research and service to AIP he left an enduring gift to students. It is his wonderful translation from the French of Jean Philbert's textbook that was published in English with the title "Atom Movements, Diffusion and Mass Transport in Solids."
John Morral
As one of Steve's stable of reviewers, I found him a joy to work with. He always sent me papers appropriate to my interests and knowledge.
Paul DeCarli
I remember Steve when we both were in the Metallurgy Division at Argonne National Laboratory. His humor and wit were most enjoyable.
Ron Peterson
I arrived at Argonne more than 40 years ago as a young postdoc. Even though I did not work in his group, Steve soon became my closest contact who, in his friendly and considerate manner and with great wisdom introduced me into numerous aspects of life in America. Steve was equally interested in arts and science, he knew all the good restaurants, and his views on politics were well pondered and often at variance with those prevailing in Washington. When Steve was called to become chief editor of Journal of Applied Physics ‑‑ too early at his stage of his career in my opinion ‑‑ he took up the challenge and devote many years of his life to this challenge with the same care and enthusiasm that he devoted to his scientific work.
