Roland grew up in Barnum, MN. He earned a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics and Michigan Technological University, and in 1960 he received Ph.D. in solid state physics from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
In 1962 Roland taught in the Reed College Physics Department. During his few years in Portland, OR. Roland met and married his life-long companion Joan Acton Hanson. In 1966 Roland joined the young and rising faculty in the Physics and Astronomy Department at Arizona State University. Roland pioneered the technique of using diamond anvil cells and Raman spectroscopy to understand the physics of materials at pressures on the order of giga Pascals.
Roland will be missed by all his professional colleagues, but perhaps most by the students and postdocs whose careers he helped establish.

As a graduate student in Dr. Hanson's Solid State Physics class in 1970, I always appreciated the help that he gave me, even inviting me over to his home once to go over some difficulties I was having. He will always have a fond place in my heart!
