Steep rise in pressure and energy for opening of many quark-gluon degrees of freedom

Steep rise of pressure p (blue points) and energy density E (red points) with increasing temperature T above 130 MeV indicates the opening of many quarkgluon degrees of freedom in this lattice-gauge QCD calculation of the thermodynamics of very hot nuclear matter.15 For simplicity, the calculation assumes only two quark flavors. Normalized to T 4, both variables become dimensionless (in natural units) and asymptotically approach the green line if the quark masses are zero.
