The graduate student

How does he see himself?

OpenURL
Show Topic
Despite the usual grumbles about their courses and exams, the increasing length of the PhD course and poor student–faculty relations at some schools, most physics graduate students appear to be reasonably content with their lot.

Why has he changed?

John C. Slater
OpenURL
Show Topic
Practical necessity and changes in research, education and specialization have produced more conformity and conservatism, resulting in relatively fewer scientific leaders.

How does he fare in Britain?

Clifford C. Butler
OpenURL
Show Topic
Expansion of British universities in the early 1960's encouraged the traditional flow of physics PhD's into academic careers. Now that new university posts are rare, British industry will have to be urged to employ more PhD's; perhaps we should add subjects such as management and economics to the course.

What does he study?

Arnold A. Strassenburg and Margaret T. Llano
OpenURL
Show Topic
A varied program of coursework, research, major examinations and language requirements awaits the prospective physics graduate student when he has fulfilled the equally varied entrance standards.

Where does he come from? Where does he go?

Susanne D. Ellis
OpenURL
Show Topic
Statistics show the typical graduate student is male and 25 and has a bachelor's degree from a large PhD‐granting institution. The draft and cuts in support are changing his luck.
